Exploring Grief and Loss Through Creativity with Jess Kion

When my dad died, I was flooded with memories. As these memories resurfaced, I decided to “catch” some of them in song form to help me process the range of emotions I was going through. This work turned into an album called “my dad died” and ended up being the most meaningful art I’ve ever made. The biggest surprise while writing these songs was how much heaviness lifted off of me and entered straight into the songs I was writing. Using the creative process to externalize grief and loss is one of the best reasons to be human! We’re going to forget about what makes art “good” and return to the child-like reasons we pick up a crayon or sing – to get feelings out!

In this one day intensive workshop, we’ll look at our grief and start capturing the sort of memories and feelings that surface around loss. We’ll expand on those memories and feelings as our creative intuition guides the way. We ask that you enter with openness ready to share, feel, and listen with equal intensity. We will do a bit of writing, drawing, and singing (no experience required.)

Jess Kion aka Justice Cow (they/ them) has written over a hundred songs and contributed to over a dozen albums (many recorded at Big Nice!). Jess graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2013 majoring in Songwriting. Jess has toured the US, Canada, and Europe with Justice Cow, Nova One, and Bent Knee. Jess currently teaches a weekly Songwriting Workshop at Brown University and has also taught songwriting at New Urban Arts, Community Music Works, and Berklee College of Music. Songwriting and Lyrics are some of their favorite things that exist!
