This Must Be the Place: The Poetics of Home with Mark Jay Brewin, Jr.

$400.00

8 Week Course
Sundays 2-4PM
April 19th - June 7th 2026

In this eight-week, in-person workshop, we will explore the metaphysical and tangible terrain of a ‘place’ we know (or think we know), or homes/locations that may only exist in our memory. Weekly readings will be themed and include poems by contemporary and foundational figures--such as Seamus Heaney, Mary Oliver, Philip Levine, Larry Levis, Claudia Emerson, Kathleen Graber, John Burnside, Rodney Jones, and Dorianne Laux (to name a few).

For poets of all levels/backgrounds, generative writing prompts will highlight the poetic elements that link physical landscapes and personal histories. Students will have the opportunity to have their poems workshopped, and all workshopping will be guided by respectful discussion. By the final class, course participants will have an understanding of technique and clear images/lines, as well as everyday practices to set the groundwork for future writing.
