Wet Feet/Rubber Boots: Essentials for the Aspiring Poet with Mark Jay Brewin, Jr.

This generative poetry workshop is for writers looking to ‘get their feet wet’ in the genre and take a deep dive into how to begin a poem, as well as folks who are ankle deep in the revision/‘re-visioning’ process or looking to break the spell of writer's block. We will discuss the “impulse” of the poet and poem through readings/discussion of poets such as Seamus Heaney, Emilia Philips, Hayan Charara, Ruth Awad, Mary Oliver, Roger Reeves, and Sylvia Plath. We will also use in-class exercises to develop the fixed and unfixed elements of a piece—story, form, music and imagination.

Those participating in the course will leave the day with a personal guide for creating a poem, sound revision strategies, and a sense of community.

Mark Jay Brewin, Jr. is a graduate of the MFA program of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. His poems have been published or are forthcoming in numerous journals including Antioch Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, The Cortland Review, The Missouri Review Online, North American Review, Prairie Schooner, Sycamore Review, Southern Humanities Review, Tahoma Literary Review, and elsewhere.  They have also won the 2010 Yellowwood Poetry Contest at the Yalobusha Review, the 2015 Iowa Sweet Corn Prize at Flyway: Journal of Writing & Environment, the 2016 Fugue Poetry Prize, as well as been nominated for several Pushcart Prizes. His first book manuscript Scrap Iron won the 2012 Agha Shahid Ali Poetry Prize at the University of Utah Press. Mark has taught at Elon University and Johnson & Wales University-Providence, and provided poetry portfolio consultations to writers for over a decade.
