Writing White Hot – Without Getting Burned: Craft Techniques for Charged Material

Reveal yourself! But at what cost? In this workshop, we’ll examine ways writers can honestly tackle hard truths without compromising themselves. We’ll study examples from other writers who have succeeded at this balance and, conversely, discuss what happens when we lose grip of our craft and give in to the pull of our rawest emotions. Readings will include examples from authors such as Paul Crenshaw, Alysia Abbott, Alex Marzano-Lesnevich, Joan Didion and others.

While the emphasis will be on creative nonfiction, the lessons are cross functional for all genres. The workshop will also offer 2-3 writing exercises, a focus on concrete craft techniques you can use in your own writing, and a way to stress test if you’re ready to tell your toughest material—and, if you’re not, a method for how to get there.

Fallon Masterson is the producer of the award-winning storytelling show Stranger Stories, a reading series dedicated to memoir and personal essay. Her work has been supported by the Rhode Island State Council of the Arts and she has been awarded a residency at Linden Place and a Spoken Award for Best Personal Storyteller from Motif. She earned her MFA from Lesley University. She lives in Providence, RI.
